Perspectives is a 15 week discipleship class

Perspectives will help you develop a vision
for the heart and purpose of God.

You will learn firsthand from 15 highly-regarded
missions leaders and mentors across denominations. 
You will be challenged by their personal experiences.

WHAT ARE THE ENROLLMENT OPTIONS?


First Night Free: Register at no cost to give the class a try and have the opportunity hear a foundational teaching. We will stretch the opportunity to two nights before requiring payment to continue. The class readings for the first two weeks are available online after registering. Cost $0


Key Reading Level:  Prepare for great speakers and their material with light reading.  Be challenged to consider your own role in world missions.  This level requires about 1-2 hours of reading each week with minimal written homework.  Five "Personal Reflections" assigned during the term will require about an hour each to complete. 
COST $290

Certificate Level:  This is the recommended level for a much richer experience.  It involves weekly homework assignments, five "Personal Reflections" and one research project due at the end of the term in May. This level requires about 4 hours of work per week. 
COST $290

College Credit Level:  A more in-depth study with 3 semester credit hours given through Columbia International University.  It involves additional reading and two research projects due April 21. COST Undergrad $500, Grad $500

Dates:  Registration, orientation and distribution of textbooks  on January 11. First classes start January 18 and run through April 25 with an optional Celebration Week May 2.

      The Living God is a Missionary God

      God's purpose is three-fold: against evil—kingdom victory; for the nations—redemption and blessing; and for God—global glory in worship. God's purpose revealed in promise to Abraham. Exploring God's purpose for the nations: Blessing to the nations described.

      For 10 years Richard served as the director of mobilization and candidacy for TMS Global, a sending agency in Peachtree Corners, GA. He left this role in June 2017 in order to pursue an opportunity In Ethiopia through TMS Global. Richard's ministry passions are networking, teaching, evangelism, and helping people to discern their calling. In addition to his responsibilities with TMS Global, Richard participates in several national and international networks, including the Lausanne Movement. He had the privilege of serving as the global selection chair for the 2016 Lausanne Younger Leaders Gathering, which brought together younger leaders and mentors from over 140 countries. A person who loves diversity, Richard has a variety of friendships all of which have made him who he is today. He and his wife Amanda have 4 young children, who they enjoy raising as World Christians.

      Christopher R. Little has over eighteen years of cross-cultural experience in which he has sought to advance God’s mission in Kenya, Europe, the Asian sub-continent, Mozambique, and Jordan. He holds a Ph.D. from Fuller Theological Seminary and presently is a Professor of Intercultural Studies at Columbia International University where he equips others for Christian mission. He is the author of The Revelation of God Among the Unevangelized: An Evangelical Appraisal and Missiological Contribution to the Debate and Mission in the Way of Paul: Biblical Mission for the Church in the Twenty-First Century, as well as numerous articles in various journals.

      Exploring God's purpose regarding evil: How God has accomplished a defeat of evil powers in order to open a season of history in which the nations can freely follow Christ. The kingdom of God as the destiny of all history. Christ's mission seeks a hindering of evil to bring about a sign of the coming peace of the kingdom of God. Our prayers contend with evil in order to bring about the transformation of society with Christ's kingdom in view.

      Jesus shows great strategic interest in Gentiles; wise strategic focus by initiating a global mission on a few disciples among the Hebrew people. The Great Commission and the ways of God's sending in relational power. Dealing with the ideas of pluralism (all religions the same) and universalism (all persons saved).

      “My parents were missionaries when I was young boy in Bolivia, South America. I graduated from High School in a small community just outside of Flint Michigan. I attended Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind., and graduated with a double major in Christian Ministry and Biblical Literature. While at IWU, I played on the soccer team and was involved with student leadership. My wife also graduated as a nurse from IWU. After graduation I served for several years as youth pastor at College Wesleyan Church and then I went on to Asbury Theological Seminary. After seminary I was the pastor of a Wesleyan church in the suburbs of Milwaukee for five years before we left for 10 years of mission work in Zambia, Africa. We have four sons, two born in Wisconsin and two in Zambia. Three have graduated from SWU – one is a doctor and two are ministers, while the fourth son is a current student at SWU. I am the missions mobilizer at SWU and I've planned and lead missions trips for students to over 20 different countries.”

      The first followers of Jesus: obedient in costly, foundational ways. The climactic act of the book of Acts is the freeing of the gospel to be followed by Gentiles without Jewish traditions as a requirement. A foundational act of God which speaks to the situations where the gospel is hindered today. Strategic suffering and apostolic passion.

      Theological Education Initiative, Forest City NC

      Gary served in Bulgaria 1992–2010 where he went to help establish a seminary for training Bulgarians for the ministry, teaching New Testament courses and serving as academic dean. In 2010 Gary, his wife Karen, and boys Stephen and David relocated to North Carolina when Gary assumed the role of Theological Education Coordinator for United World Mission. Karen is a facilitator at the Center for Intercultural Training where missionaries preparing to go overseas receive pre-field cross-cultural training. Gary has a Masters in Theology from Talbot Seminary and a PhD from Durham University (UK). He has a passion for training and has taught theological and leadership courses in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

      Priscilla Strom is a breast surgeon from Gainesville, GA. She grew up in India where her parents were missionaries for 40 years. She served with LAMB Hospital in Bangladesh for 10 years. Currently in private practice, she helps with children's ministry at church, mentors medical students, and volunteers in both domestic and overseas medical ministries.

      Today we anchor the race by continuing what others have begun. It's a day of finishing. All the more reason to learn the wisdom and the heart of ordinary people who did extraordinary things in earlier generations. Reading the writings of William Carey and other leaders to discern what these people have left to us. Exploring the contribution of women in missions throughout the centuries.

      Crossover Global, Columbia SC

      Ken Katayama, born in Curitiba, Brazil, joined Crossover Global in 1999. After serving at the Crossover Global base in Brazil for six years he began working in various leadership positions at the Crossover Global base in the USA. In 2020 he became the President and CEO of Crossover Global. Ken holds a Bible certificate from Word of Life Biblical Seminary in Brazil; a B.A. in Bible and a Master of Arts in Muslim Studies from Columbia International University in Columbia, USA. He served six years on the board of Missio Nexus (the North American Missions Association) and he served for five years on the board of COMHINA (COMIBAM USA). Currently he serves as a Deputy Leader for the World Evangelical Alliance Mission Commission and as a Perspectives instructor teaching various lessons throughout the United States. Ken, his wife Kristi, and their three children make their home in Columbia, SC.

      How Shall They Hear?

      Culture and intercultural communication of the gospel. Communicating the gospel with relevance at the worldview level helps avoid syncretism (blending of cultural error with God?s truth) and also enables powerful movements of the gospel. Sensitive missionaries will look for ways that God has preserved or prepared people to hear the gospel, often finding redemptive analogies for God's truth.

      Dustin and his wife moved to Asheville, NC in 2013, after spending 5 years teaching and supporting local church development in China. He earned his MA in Intercultural Communications while in China, graduating from Wheaton College in 2012. Dustin founded MAP Global in 2017 to provide a platform for entrepreneurial Christian Missionaries and Ministry Leaders. Dustin's calling is to support other Christians in their Kingdom purposes.

The basic minimal missiological achievement in every people group opens the way for working with God against every kind of evil so that the gospel of the kingdom is declared and displayed with clarity and power.       Wycliffe Bible Translators, Greensboro NC

      Marsha came to faith in Christ in 1979 on a hippie journey to Africa, searching for the meaning of life; three years later she began what would become a life-time career, engaging the globe for her Lord. Marsha has served in Latin America, Europe and North Africa, including the adventure of living in refugee camps in the Sahara Desert. In 2010 she joined Wycliffe Bible Translators, serving their partner Seed Company as Field Coordinator and Training Manager, and currently as Launch Coordinator for Wycliffe USA. Marsha's passion, training and mentoring new cross-cultural workers, led her to author “To Timbuktu and Beyond: A Guide to Getting Started in Missions”, published by William Carey Library, in 2009.

      The incarnation as a model of missionary humility. How missionaries can enter appropriate roles in order to form relationships of trust and respect to develop a sense of belonging, and thus to communicate with credibility for understanding. Explore the intricacy of identification in another culture. Explore the even greater complexity of presenting identity with integrity in a globalized, terrorized, pluralized world. Recognizing the dynamics of social structure in order to initiate growing movements of ongoing communication throughout the society.

      Marti has been teaching Perspectives since the 1990’s and serving with Pioneers (Pioneers.org) since 2007, where she is the editorial director for the Marketing Team. Previously she was part of a ministry that sent teams to conduct ethnographic research to support strategic prayer and ministry efforts in unreached cities. She is the editor and publisher of the weekly Missions Catalyst newsletter (MissionsCatalyst.net) and serves on the board for MissionWorks (MissionWorks.global).

      The Spontaneous Multiplication of Churches

      Look beyond institutional features of churches to understand churches as dynamic movements of Christ Himself being followed. Such a view of churches as organic, living things opens up the practicality of seeing them multiply rapidly as movements and also flourish in society bearing the fruit of social transformation. Churches as counter-communities, acting as salt and light, bringing change to their cultures. How movements multiply by connecting with entire families and larger social structures.
