      John van Gorkom

      Calvary Baptist Church, Davis CA

Fifty-eight years ago Pastor John van Gorkom repented of his sin and, based on no merit of his own, received the gracious gift of forgiveness and eternal life from Jesus Christ whose sacrifice on the cross and resurrection from the dead accomplished God’s redemptive purpose for the whole world. Since the age of 15 Pastor John has been faithfully teaching the Word of God, starting in Sunday School, progressing to Bethel College Outreach Teams, and then on to 11 years of bi-vocational church ministry. In 1987 Pastor John accepted God’s call into full-time pastoral ministry and moved to First Baptist Church in Augusta, WI. After six years of fruitful ministry, God took him through a series of ministry challenges that refined his pastoral skills, and in March of 1996 he became the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Eau Claire, WI where he continues to serve as the Lead Pastor of Preaching, Teaching, and Leadership Development.

      Kirk Militzer

      Eau Claire WI

Pastor Kirk Militzer began serving at Bethesda since August of 2015. He had served at another fabulous church, Triumph Lutheran Brethren in the Fargo-Moorhead area for 25 years before he and his wife Julie wife moved to Eau Claire. Pastor Kirk is the Lead Pastor serving as the main preaching pastor, overseeing worship, and giving leadership to the vision of Bethesda and directing the ministry team. Here is Pastor Kirk's story... "My mom and dad took me to church as an active little boy. I asked Jesus into my heart on Sept 18, 1972. I heard the speaker talk about heaven and hell and I know where I didn’t want to spend forever! In High School, I experienced the gospel clearly preached and lived out in the passionate life of my youth pastor. My senior year in High School, at a Bible Camp in Northern Minnesota, the Lord put a call in my heart to serve Him full-time. God has graciously led me through incredible educational opportunities as well as surrounding me with great mentors and leaders, and a vast number of godly and life giving friends and peers. This city boy from Minneapolis married a Norwegian farmer’s daughter, Julie Lynn (Tollefsen) from Crookston, MN in 1987. I married way out of my league. Julie is an elementary teacher. She is a sweetie and when possible enjoys scrapbooking, walking, and spending time with her larger extended family. We have three young Adult children Danielle (who is married to Matt Casperson — die hard Packer fan), Josh, and Josiah. I love to laugh, watch espionage movies with stuff that blows up, read, watch sports, run — kind of — eat black and red licorice together, consume monster nachos, am a proud member of Team Pheasant, hunt deer (never got one but have tons of cool hunting gear . . . that is saying something) , and never, ever get tired of hearing about the extravagant grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. This shepherd bleeds Viking Purple. Every fall I do drink the purple Kool-aid and say emphatically “This will be our year!” Pastor Kirk’s super powers are encouragement and desiring to lead with joy.

In 2010 the Lord unexpectedly called them back overseas to be the lead couple to prepare the way to open a new field for their organization and to pastor an international fellowship in their host country. After more than three years, with a good foundation laid, they returned to life in the States. J & D have two wonderful sons, a delightful daughter-in-law and two amazing grandchildren.
