Perspectives is a 15 week life and learning opportunity that will change the way you view the world around you. In it, you will have your eyes opened to the heart and purpose of God, and how you can take part in His work all over the world, from the urban streets of America to the rain forest and deserts of distant lands. A fantastic array of pastors, theologians, international missiologists and mobilizers will challenge and inspire you with their personal experiences that will open your eyes to see just how big God is, and how much He desires that all might come to know HimWhether you are single, married, a student, a homemaker, a professional or retired, Perspectives will bless and challenge your life and direction.

      Your Kingdom Come

      Exploring God's purpose regarding evil: How God has accomplished a defeat of evil powers in order to open a season of history in which the nations can freely follow Christ. The kingdom of God as the destiny of all history. Christ's mission seeks a hindering of evil to bring about a sign of the coming peace of the kingdom of God. Our prayers contend with evil in order to bring about the transformation of society with Christ's kingdom in view.

      Wycliffe Bible Translators, Dallas TX

      Born in South Korea, Sunny Hong came to the US in 1983. She was employed in the computer software profession and was active in a local church. At that time Sunny was seeking for God’s call as to how she could be involved in missions. Eventually she felt God’s calling to the ministry of Wycliffe Bible translators. She joined Wycliffe in 1994 and worked as a mobilizer for Koreans in the US and Canada for 12 years. She then was sent to the Philippines to work as a mobilization consultant for the Wycliffe Asia and Pacific areas. While in the Philippines, she sensed God redirecting her ministry to missiology/anthropology. She pursued an intercultural studies Ph.D. program at Biola and after completing these studies, started working as a senior intercultural consultant at SIL International which includes teaching at Dallas International University, in Dallas, TX.

      Unleashing the Gospel

      The first followers of Jesus: obedient in costly, foundational ways. The climactic act of the book of Acts is the freeing of the gospel to be followed by Gentiles without Jewish traditions as a requirement.       David is an avid storyteller. As a missions mobilizer he uses story to help people understand God’s global purpose and discover their place in that plan. David grew up as a missionary kid in Panama. A graduate of Texas A&M University, David currently works for his alma mater. He also serves as a volunteer with a campus ministry. He has helped lead short-term student ministry trips and has worked with churches and church-planting ministries in several countries around the world.

      How Shall They Hear?

      Culture and intercultural communication of the gospel. Communicating the gospel with relevance at the worldview level helps avoid syncretism (blending of cultural error with God?s truth) and also enables powerful movements of the gospel. Sensitive missionaries will look for ways that God has preserved or prepared people to hear the gospel, often finding redemptive analogies for God's truth.

      Asbury Theological Seminary 1984-2005; The Mission Society 2005-2014; Interim Executive Director, Overseas Ministries Study Center 2015-2016; Global Development 2017-present; , Gig Harbor WA

      Darrell Whiteman is a missiological anthropologist now semi-retired but continues to teach and train cross-cultural workers around the globe. He retired as VP and Resident Missiologist at The Mission Society, now TMS-Global. Darrell served in cross-cultural ministry for nine years in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Central Africa, then was one of the founding professors of Asbury Theological Seminary's School of World Mission and Evangelism, where he taught for 21 years and served as dean in the later years. He’s given leadership to many professional missiological societies researching the intersection of cultures and biblical values. Darrell annually equips hundreds of cross-cultural witnesses to understand God's mission around the globe and to help them to better connect the gospel to the deepest part of their worldview.

      James (Jim) is a 42 yr veteran missionary with the Southern Baptist International Mission Board (30yrs) and Missional Team (12ys). He and his wife Viola have directed disaster relief and community development projects, church planting, and leadership training. Jim and Viola were part of a church planting movement that saw over 300 churches planted in 18 years among the Miskito people of the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua and Honduras. Most recently Jim has facilitated a church planting effort in Ethiopia resulting in over 40 churches being planted among the Bacho Oromo people of Western Shewa.

      The Spontaneous Multiplication of Churches

      Look beyond institutional features of churches to understand churches as dynamic movements of Christ Himself being followed. Such a view of churches as organic, living things opens up the practicality of seeing them multiply rapidly as movements and also flourish in society bearing the fruit of social transformation. Churches as counter-communities, acting as salt and light, bringing change to their cultures. How movements multiply by connecting with entire families and larger social structures.

      Disciple Making Mentors, Fayetteville AR

      Brian and Louise Hogan have served in mission since 1987. From the Navajo Tribe to Outer Mongolia, their passion has been to see Jesus glorified and lifted up among those who have never known Him. From 1993-1996 their team pioneered a church planting movement in Erdenet (AIR-DUH-NET), Mongolia that continues to grow under fully indigenous leadership to this day. Their Mongolian disciples are now training and sending out their own missionaries to other unreached people groups. The story of the work in Erdenet can be read in Brian’s book: There’s a Sheep in my Bathtub (Asteroidea Books), and in the case study article – “Distant Thunder: Mongols Follow the Khan of Khans” – on page 695 of your Perspectives Reader.

      Hudson Smith is from the United States, and grew up in Arkansas, earning a degree in history from the University of Arkansas. For 10 years, he served as the Director of Operations for The Traveling Team. The Traveling Team is a mobilization organization that recruits college students from all major US universities toward Christ's global cause. During his time on staff, he traveled to 49 states and 3 countries and spoke to over 40,000 college students, sharing God's heart for the world. He also spoke extensively at Perspectives classes and missions conferences for churches. In 2021, he and his family moved to Dubai, UAE to serve as the Director of Operations for Redeemer Church of Dubai. He has Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Reformed Theological Seminary.
