      Tae Pae

      Grace Community, Hanover MD

I was born into a third-generation Christian family in South Korea and grew up in the church. My parents made all six of their children attend early morning prayer services when I was young. Even on the coldest mornings of Korean winter, we went because we would receive thick, winter socks for perfect attendance. In 1975, my family immigrated to U. S. I was 11 and attended a secondary school. Falling into a troubled group, I began to use illegal substances in the seventh grade. By eighth grade, I was not only using but selling drugs. In my teens, I strayed and stayed away from Church. In my high school senior year, I was expelled, crushing the dreams my parents had for me. After high school, I drifted and lived with friends and made my living mostly by dealing cocaine for the next ten years of my life. I was once jailed for possession of drugs with intent to sell. I kept dealing drugs until I became addicted to crack-cocaine and began to deteriorate physically. However, my parents and my little sister never gave up on me. My sister gave me a book called No Compromise, which had a tremendous impact on my life. After reading the book, I began to attend church again. When I saw the little children worshiping joyfully, I was deeply touched. Then by the conviction of the Holy Spirit, I began to repent before God and was led back to the Lord. I experienced the forgiveness of sin in my life by the blood of Christ, and the Word of God began to renew me. A year after my conversion, I made a commitment to help make a difference and impact the lives of the struggling youth kids of my church. Upon my father’s advice, I became a Sunday school teacher but immediately realized that I lacked biblical insights. So, I started to attend Washington Bible College in 1992 to become a better Sunday school teacher. After college, I attended and graduated from the Capital Bible Seminary with M.Div. in 1998. During this season of learning, I felt the call to missions at Urbana 1993 and made a commitment to global missions. Since then, I have been serving as a pastor for 28 years and as a Missions Pastor during the last 15 years. I have also lived in Thailand for two years to develop a strategy to reach the Thai career professionals, and I am now serving as the Missions Pastor at Grace Community Church in Fulton, Md. I am married to Kathy, and we have two children, Madison and Hudson.

Look beyond institutional features of churches to understand churches as dynamic movements of Christ Himself being followed. Churches as counter-communities, acting as salt and light, bringing change to their cultures. How movements multiply by connecting with entire families and larger social structures.
